Pinktober - Raising Awareness and Promoting Early Detection
October marks the global spotlight on breast cancer awareness. While breast cancer is most commonly associated with women, it can also affect men. Although the exact causes of breast cancer remain unclear, experts suggest it results from a combination of genetic, hormonal, and lifestyle factors. According to Bupa UK, breast cancer occurs when cells in breast tissue grow abnormally and uncontrollably.
Each year, around 55,000 women in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer, along with approximately 400 men. Risk factors include being over 50, a family history of breast cancer, being overweight, and certain lifestyle habits.
While there’s no guaranteed way to prevent breast cancer, adopting healthier habits can help reduce the risk:
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Stay physically active
- Avoid smoking
- Schedule regular mammograms
In support of this important cause, we at Godwin Austen Johnson organised a special awareness event. Staff members were encouraged to wear pink, symbolising solidarity. We were also privileged to host Dr. Dima Al Najjar, Specialist Breast Radiologist from Health Bay Clinic, for an insightful session on breast cancer symptoms and the importance of early detection through regular check-ups.
This session was open to all employees, including male colleagues, emphasising that breast cancer isn’t exclusive to women. By increasing awareness and understanding, we aim to foster a culture of proactive health care and solidarity in the fight against breast cancer.
